1 June 2019 : Camasunary Bay Beach Clean

Featured

Sadly the weather was not on our side today. However the valiant residents of Skye aren’t put off by the weather. The rubbish on Camasunary beach had been building up over many years but today we managed to remove by boat about 60 sacks of plastics, rope and other rubbish. There is still more to do but there will be another beach clean day organised for August.

For move information on beach cleaning on Skye see the Skye Marine Matters Facebook page.

30 October 2021; Camasunary Beach Clean

After two years of delay due to the Coronavirus restrictions the plastic is finally shipped out! what a brilliant effort from the pupils of Portree High School with assistance from the Otter Boys, MOWI, the Highland Council and the MBA. 1.2 tons of plastic was removed in just a few hours.

The weather forecast was not at all encouraging. High winds and hail showers were predicted today. Indeed the dark clouds hung over the Cullin as I set off along the Torrin road on route to Kilmarie, one on the gateways to Camasunary bay. However, after a wild hail shower the clouds parted and the morning proved sunny and clear. After an hours treck over the hill to Camasunary bay I set about fixing the leaking gutter iat the Bothy and collecting three bags of rubbish from the beach. Much more rubbish still to collect! So depressing. All was quiet at the Bothy but there were five cars in the Kilmarie car park. A couple of mountain bikers from Sligachan expected to find a hotel in Kilmaire! I was sad to disappoint them. They headed back to Sligachan hungry and tired. I suggested that they call into the Bothy on the way back to light a fire and make soup. Maybe they did?

Stinky Beach, Near Heaste, Isle of Skye

The Stinky Beach is about half a mile west of Heaste [what three words; ///twee.assures.owner ]. I gets the full force of the prevailing south westerly gales and as a result plastic and other detritus has been accumulating over the years. The results are truly upsetting. The beach is covered layers and layers of rope and netting plus a top layer of lighter items such as plastic bottles, cartons, shoes, oil cans etc. The hinterland to the beach was covered with similar light items, plus half a kayak, but they have been cleared now.

The beach is gradually being cleared and the bagged rubbish piled under netting out of the prevailing wind. Please help if you can. The next stage is to source a rib to transfer the rubbish round the coast to skips located at Heaste pontoon. If you would like to get involved please contact me at; blackshedshul@gmail.com.

Thank you.

Camasunary Beach Clean 24 August 2019

Good weather and lots of people made the beach clean day a great success. The Skye Marine Matters rib delivered over a tin of rubbish to the skip waiting at Elgol pier. Camasunary bay finally looks pristine and beautiful again. Many thanks to all helpers including: Gill and Tom from Skye Marine Matters, Surfers Against Sewage for the bags and insurance, Ally and Carolyn for their time Andy quad bikes, The Highland Council for the skip, the Highland Council Harbour Master for allowing the skip and boat to use the Elgol Harbour, the Mountain Bothies Association, All Things Cullen Facebook Page, Alan Johnson and the Neil MacKenzie Trust for their support and all the helpers on the day; Judy, Alistair, Dawn and Alistair, Issac, Brigitte and Adrian, and others whose names I sadly can’t remember.
